For Canadian technology startups & scale-ups

Fractional CTO and CISO leadership for technology startups

Your product is moving fast, enterprise buyers are sending security questionnaires, and investors ask hard technical questions in due diligence, usually before you can justify a full-time CTO or CISO. ABISOL provides senior technical and security leadership that works alongside your engineers, so architecture and security help you close deals instead of stalling them.

The pressures you face

The security and technology pressures on growing startups

Enterprise expectations arrive long before an enterprise-sized team.

  • Enterprise security reviews
Questionnaires and requests for SOC 2 or ISO 27001 that stall deals in procurement.
  • Investor technical due diligence
Questions about architecture, security, scalability, IP and technical debt.
  • Architecture decisions that are hard to reverse
Build vs. buy, cloud platform, data model and integration choices made under pressure.
  • Third-party and supply-chain risk
SaaS tools, open-source components and APIs your product depends on, and that your customers will ask about.
  • Privacy obligations
PIPEDA and provincial laws, plus the data-processing terms your customers want in their contracts.
  • No senior security owner
Security handled part-time by founders and engineers between releases.
  • AI in your product
Questions about customer data, model risk and AI use that now appear in security reviews.

Regulatory context: SOC 2 and ISO 27001 aren't legal requirements in Canada. They are commercial expectations that enterprise buyers and investors may ask for. Privacy law is a legal requirement: under PIPEDA, businesses must report breaches that pose a real risk of significant harm, notify affected individuals and keep records of all breaches for two years. Quebec's Law 25 and the BC and Alberta private-sector laws may also apply, depending on where you and your customers are. If you sell to federally regulated banks or insurers, expect their third-party risk programs (OSFI Guideline B-10) to assess you.

Why the usual approach falls short

Why ad-hoc security stops working as a startup grows

  • Founders own security by default

It competes with fundraising, hiring and sales, and usually loses.

  • Engineers fix issues, not programs

Strong technical work, but no policies, evidence or roadmap behind it.

  • Questionnaires get answered ad hoc

Every enterprise deal restarts the scramble, with answers that may not match reality.

  • Architecture debt builds quietly

Shortcuts that were right for the MVP become blockers at scale or in due diligence.

  • A compliance tool without an owner

Software gets bought, but nobody owns the program behind it.

Questions technology startups ask us

Do we need SOC 2 now?

Only if your buyers or investors require it, or will soon. Many startups first need accurate questionnaire answers and a credible security program. We'll tell you honestly when certification is worth the cost, and help you get ready efficiently when it is.

Our engineers are strong. Why would we need a CTO or CISO?

Strong engineers build good systems. A fractional CTO or CISO owns the decisions, policies, evidence and customer and investor conversations around them. We work beside your engineers, not over them.

Can you work with our compliance automation platform?

Yes. ABISOL is vendor-independent and doesn't resell any platform. We work with the tool you already have, or help you decide whether you need one.

Can you help with investor due diligence?

Yes. We help you prepare a clear picture of your architecture, security and technical debt, and the plan to address it, before investors or acquirers ask.

We can't afford a full-time CTO or CISO.

That's the gap fractional leadership is designed for: senior judgment for an agreed amount of time each month, scaled to your stage.

Do we need a CTO or a CISO?

A CTO leads what you build and how; a CISO leads how it's secured and how you prove it. Many startups need a blend, and ABISOL covers both.

Can we trust an outsider with our code and data?

We work with least-privilege access, avoid holding your sensitive data wherever possible, and sign an NDA. You keep ownership and control throughout.
