For growing, regulated small & mid-size businesses

Senior technology and cyber leadership for regulated small and mid-size businesses

Professional-services firms, financial-services businesses and suppliers to banks, insurers and government face the same questions as large enterprises, from regulators, clients and insurers, with a fraction of the people. ABISOL provides senior technology, cybersecurity and transformation leadership so you can answer those questions with confidence and keep growing, without a full-time CIO or CISO.

The pressures you face

The technology and cyber pressures on regulated small and mid-size businesses

Enterprise-grade expectations, small-business resources.

  • Privacy and breach obligations
PIPEDA, or a provincial equivalent such as Quebec's Law 25, sets duties for safeguarding personal information, reporting breaches and keeping breach records.
  • Client due diligence
Security questionnaires and contract clauses from larger clients. Banks and insurers must manage third-party risk under OSFI's Guideline B-10.
  • Cyber-insurance requirements
Insurers commonly ask about controls such as MFA, tested backups and an incident plan before offering or renewing coverage.
  • Email and payment fraud
Impersonation of executives, clients and suppliers to redirect payments.
  • IT that has outgrown its owner
Technology run by a founder, an office manager or an MSP, with no one senior setting direction.
  • Growth brings complexity
New systems, acquisitions, cloud services and AI tools, each adding risk if no one is governing them.
  • Sector and professional expectations
Your regulator or professional body may set its own expectations for confidentiality, records and technology.

Regulatory context: under PIPEDA, businesses must report breaches of security safeguards that pose a real risk of significant harm to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, notify affected individuals, and keep records of all breaches for two years (see the OPC's guidance). Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia have their own private-sector privacy laws. If you serve federally regulated banks or insurers, OSFI's Guideline B-10 (in effect since May 2024) shapes how they assess you as a supplier. For a recognized baseline, CyberSecure Canada offers voluntary certification for small and medium organizations against the CAN/CIOSC 104 baseline cyber security controls.

Why the usual approach falls short

Why compliance demands outgrow a small IT team

  • The MSP runs operations, not strategy

Support works, but nobody owns cyber risk, privacy or the technology plan.

  • Questionnaires get answered ad hoc

Each client request becomes a scramble, with answers that may not match reality.

  • Policies are missing or out of date

Hard to show a client, insurer or regulator what you actually do.

  • Leadership gets little reporting

Owners and partners hear about technology risk only when something goes wrong.

  • Cyber is treated as an IT issue

Instead of a risk to clients, revenue, contracts and reputation.

Questions regulated SMEs ask us

We already pay an MSP. Do we replace them?

No. They do different jobs. Keep a good MSP for day-to-day support. ABISOL governs above it, sets the strategy and holds the provider to clear service levels.

A client just sent us a 200-question security questionnaire. Can you help?

Yes. We help you answer accurately, fix the gaps that matter most, and build a reusable answer library and short trust overview, so the next questionnaire takes hours instead of weeks.

Do we need SOC 2, ISO 27001 or CyberSecure Canada certification?

Only if your clients, contracts or market require it. We'll tell you honestly which, if any, is worth it now, and help you get ready efficiently when it is.

Aren't we too small to be a target?

Attacks are largely automated, and email and payment fraud in particular target businesses of every size.

We can't afford a full-time CIO or CISO.

That's the gap fractional leadership is designed for: senior judgment for an agreed amount of time each month, sized to your business.

We're not ready for AI.

That's fine. We start with fundamentals. When you're ready, we help you adopt AI where it creates measurable value, with clear rules on what client information may and may not be used.

Can we trust an outsider with our data?

We work with least-privilege access, avoid holding your sensitive data wherever possible, and sign an NDA. You keep ownership and control throughout.
