For clinics, community health & care providers

Technology and cyber leadership built for healthcare organizations

Clinics, community health and care providers hold some of the most sensitive information there is, and patients depend on their systems being available. ABISOL provides senior technology, cybersecurity and privacy leadership for healthcare organizations that need it without a full-time CIO or CISO, so patient information stays protected and care keeps running.

The pressures you face

The technology and cyber pressures on healthcare organizations

Healthcare carries the highest stakes for privacy and availability, often with the smallest technology teams.

  • Personal health information
Diagnoses, treatment notes and identifiers. A breach harms patients and erodes trust.
  • Health-privacy obligations
Provincial health-privacy laws set duties for safeguarding, breach notification and, in Ontario, annual breach reporting.
  • Ransomware that disrupts care
Attacks on Canadian health organizations have taken clinical systems offline and delayed services.
  • Clinical systems must stay available
EMRs, scheduling, labs and billing. Downtime affects patients, not just productivity.
  • Many vendors and integrations
EMR vendors, labs, billing, virtual-care and messaging platforms, all touching patient data.
  • Lean IT and busy clinical leaders
An MSP and a part-time privacy lead, while clinicians and managers focus on care.
  • AI tools arriving fast
AI documentation and scribe tools promise time savings, and raise privacy, consent and accuracy questions.

Ransomware is the top cybercrime threat facing Canada's critical infrastructure, and incidents affecting the health sector have been steadily increasing.

Regulatory context: health-privacy law in Canada is provincial. In Ontario, PHIPA requires health information custodians to notify affected individuals at the first reasonable opportunity when personal health information is stolen, lost, or used or disclosed without authority. It also requires them to notify the Information and Privacy Commissioner for prescribed categories of breach and to submit annual breach statistics (see the IPC's breach-reporting guidelines). Other provinces have their own health-information laws, such as Alberta's Health Information Act. ABISOL helps you understand which obligations apply and build proportionate safeguards around them.

Why the usual approach falls short

Why healthcare IT stays focused on keeping systems running

  • The MSP runs operations, not privacy or risk

Devices and networks get maintained, but nobody owns the risk to patient information.

  • Clinical leaders have no time for technology

Decisions about systems, vendors and AI tools wait, or get made one at a time.

  • The privacy role is part-time and unsupported

Someone holds the title without the technical backing to make it work.

  • Vendors integrate without oversight

New platforms connect to patient data before anyone has reviewed the risk.

  • Cyber is treated as an IT issue

Instead of a patient-safety, continuity and trust issue owned by leadership.

Questions healthcare organizations ask us

Our EMR vendor handles security. Isn't that enough?

Your vendor secures its platform. You remain responsible for who has access, how devices and networks are secured, which other systems connect, and how you respond to a breach. We help you manage your side of that shared responsibility.

We already pay an MSP. Do we replace them?

No. Keep a good MSP for day-to-day support. ABISOL provides the privacy and security leadership above it and holds the provider to clear standards.

Aren't we too small to be a target?

Attacks are largely automated, and health information is valuable. Smaller clinics and community providers often have fewer safeguards and are affected too.

Can AI scribe and documentation tools be used safely?

Often, yes, with the right checks: where data is stored and processed, patient notice and consent, accuracy review, access controls and vendor terms. We evaluate the tool and your obligations before rollout, not after.

We can't afford a full-time CIO or CISO.

That's the gap fractional leadership is designed for: senior judgment for an agreed amount of time each month, sized to your organization.

Can we trust an outsider around patient information?

We avoid accessing personal health information wherever possible. When access is needed, we work under appropriate confidentiality and agent agreements, with least-privilege access. You keep ownership and control throughout.
